EASTERN SPORT & SPINAL CARE – AUGUST 2022

Dear Valued Client

I would like to sincerely thank all of you who supported us in our Dry July Fundraising Campaign.  I am pleased to tell you that we raised  $2000.50  for Dry July who support Pinc and Steel Cancer rehabilitation.

I am also pleased to tell you that we are now running our third 6-week Targeted Cancer rehabilitation program which is fully funded by Dry July.

Some of the feedback from the participants is as follows:

  • This was absolutely worthwhile for my physical and mental wellbeing.
  • This was one of the best experiences in terms of my health and feel-good experience.
  •  I certainly have a lot more energy.
  • I was able to do each activity for longer, walk and garden at home for longer with less fatigue.
  • I really looked forward to the classes as it helped my strength, energy level and mind set!

So, if you have friends or family members who have had any type of cancer that you feel may benefit from a helping hand to get them back on track, and feeling stronger, fitter and more confident in themselves – please share this news with them and encourage them to contact us.

Cancer Rehab Awareness week for 2022 is the 19-25th September and we want to spread the word as too many people are still missing out on living a fulfilling life after a cancer diagnosis-
Cancer Rehab can change that!

Is the room spinning for you?

We have seen several people with vertigo in the last few weeks. Vertigo or a feeling of the room spinning with or without nausea can have various causes but commonly it is related to the vestibular/ balance mechanism within your inner ear.  A virus or inflammation within your inner ear can also give you symptoms of vertigo as can changes in your blood pressure when you stand up quickly after bending over can also make you feel dizzy. Interestingly there is often marked upper cervical spine stiffness which often contributes to the dizziness.

If you find that you feel very dizzy when you lie down or roll over in bed to one particular side there is a high chance that you may have what is called BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional vertigo). This occurs when some crystals in one part of the vestibular mechanism in your ear (that helps you orientate your head position against gravity) moves into one of the vestibular canals and irritates the hairlike fibres that line the canal and this is what makes you feel like the room is spinning!

The good news is that we can help you with this by using a specific technique that flushes the crystals out of the canal. So don’t put up with it and hope it will go away, the sooner we see you the better as this reduces the sensitization of the vestibular system.

 Had Covid……. feeling fatigued?

If you have had Covid and felt quite lethargic- remember to take it slowly without pushing yourself too quickly to resume your normal level of exercise. The advice is to take it easy for 10 days after your virus, and gradually increase your level of exercise and monitoring your symptoms and heart rate.

If you continue to feel quite fatigued, we can help you with a very graduated exercise program that is appropriate for you. Gentle exercise will help with your fatigue but lying-in bed will only result in you losing muscle particularly your deep muscle control that supports your spine. It doesn’t take long to become quite deconditioned and with that, increased joint aches and pains.

The good news is that Spring is not far away and as the weather warms up, we tend to be more active which is great for our joints and muscles and of course for our mindset!

Take care in the mean-time and remember we are here if you need any help!
