Pre and Post Operative Physiotherapy are both preventative and therapeutic. It aims at preventing any post surgical complications whilst also gaining maximal function in the least amount of time.
Preparation for surgery is ideally commenced well before the operation. This gives patients the time to be educated about the surgery, what to expect, learn and practice some exercises that will help restore range of movement, muscle strength and function. It is also advisable to know which walking aids and home aids e.g. shower chair you may need when you return home so you can be safely and well set up before your return home.
Post operatively physiotherapy helps restore function by encouraging exercises that improve chest function, range of movement, muscle strength, balance, gait and transferring ability. A series of graduated and supervised home exercises enable a smooth recovery.
If treatment is required for pain, stiffness, muscle spasm or joint swelling our physiotherapists are skilled at assessing and treating these problems and will seek medical advice if necessary.
The well equipped gym at Eastern Sports and Spinal Care is an ideal forum for advancing active rehabilitation back to full function and sporting activities.
Surgeries that benefit from post operative physiotherapy rehabilitation are total hip replacements, total knee replacements, shoulder, knee and ankle reconstructions, spinal surgeries and arthroscopies to name a few.
The more educated and prepared you are for surgery the better your recovery will be.
