Ankle pain commonly occurs after a sprain or strain of the supporting ligaments but may also result from wear and tear of joint surfaces (arthritic change), overuse of the tendons around the foot due to poor foot bio-mechanics or due to compensations for other injuries.
Muscle imbalances in the lower leg e.g. very tight calves may result in joint restrictions which become painful.
Ankle pain can also result from alteration in neural tissue mobility or be referred from your spine.
